United Way of 1000 Lakes is holding its annual Personal Care Drive to collect essential toiletries and other small items to help disconnected youth, victims of violence, seniors and the homeless meet their basic needs, including hygiene items.
The drive is held annually in conjunction with United Way’s Day of Action on June 21, a massive annual volunteer initiative that takes place worldwide to improve lives and conditions in our communities. Last year, a collective 582 hours of service were garnered in the Itasca Area alone during the day equating to more than $14,000 in contributions. More than a hundred volunteers of all ages participated in various hands-on projects including prepping community garden space, packing bulk food, and installing a cement pad for a new accessible swing.
The Personal Care Drive continues through the month of June. Personal Care items can be dropped off at United Way of 1000 Lakes, located at 350 NW 1st Ave., Suite A, Grand Rapids. Other drop-off locations include: Active Living Center at Itasca Family YMCA, Klockow Brewing Company, Deerwood Bank, and Super One Foods locations in Grand Rapids.
The items will be assembled into care packages and distributed to children, veterans, elderly, homeless and vulnerable populations throughout United Way of 1000 Lakes’ service area of Itasca County and surrounding communities.
"The United Way Personal Care Drive is another way to help our neighbors in crisis," said Kimberly Brink Smith, executive director of United Way of 1000 Lakes. "Everyday items most of us take for granted, like toothbrushes, soap, or a comb can make a big difference for someone living in poverty or experiencing homelessness.”
